Privacy Policy
This policy describes how Jonathan Maurice (“we”, “us”) collects, uses and protects information when you use Turf (the “App”).
1. Who we are
Turf is built and operated by Jonathan Maurice, an individual based in Quebec, Canada, who is the controller of the data described below. Contact: support@turfdog.app
2. What stays on your device
Turf has no account and no server of its own. Everything you make in the App stays on your iPhone and, if iCloud is on, in your own private iCloud database:
- your walks, including the path of each walk;
- your marks and places, and everything in the game (bones, skills, gear, stickers);
- your dog’s profile: name, breed and photo.
Location. Turf uses your location only while the App is in use and during a walk you started, to draw the walk and clear the map. It never sends your location to us or to anyone else.
iCloud. When iCloud is on (Settings in the App), your history syncs through Apple’s CloudKit to your own private database, which we cannot read. Turning it off stops syncing and deletes nothing.
Camera and photos. Used only when you take your dog’s photo or save your dog’s reel. The photo stays on your device and in your iCloud.
3. What we collect
We collect product-interaction analytics to learn how the App is used and improve it: for example, an onboarding step finished, a walk started or ended, a mark made, a skill learned, a shop opened. Events carry counts and game details such as a level, a rounded walk distance in metres and its length in minutes, the App Store country of your account (such as “CAN”), the app version, and your device model and iOS version.
Events are tied to a random identifier created on your device for your dog’s profile. It is not connected to your name, your email, your Apple ID or any advertising identifier.
Analytics never include:
- your location, coordinates, or the names of streets and places;
- your dog’s photo, or any text you type, other than in beta builds (below);
- recordings of your screen or how you use it.
Beta builds. In TestFlight builds, your dog’s name is included in analytics so we can tell testers apart. App Store builds never send it.
Because we do not track you across other apps or websites, the App does not use Apple’s App Tracking Transparency permission.
4. Service providers
Mixpanel (Mixpanel, Inc., USA) processes the analytics on servers in the United States, under its own privacy policy. We turn off Mixpanel’s IP-based geolocation, so no location is derived from your events.
Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., USA) delivers the map. Like any website, it receives your IP address and the map tiles your device asks for while it delivers them. Turf sends it nothing else.
Apple provides iCloud and processes any purchases under its own terms. We never see your payment details.
5. Retention
Your walks and game stay on your device and in your iCloud until you delete them (deleting the App removes the copy on your device). Analytics events are kept by Mixpanel under its data retention policy.
6. Your rights under PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25
You have the right to:
- know what analytics data has been collected for your dog’s profile;
- ask that it be deleted from our analytics provider;
- stop further collection at any time, including by deleting the App;
- complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec.
To exercise any of these rights, email support@turfdog.app.
7. Your rights in the EEA, the United Kingdom and Switzerland
Legal basis. We process product-interaction analytics under our legitimate interest in understanding how the App is used and improving it (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR and its UK and Swiss equivalents). We do not process special categories of data, and we never use this data for advertising, profiling or automated decision-making.
Your rights. You may ask for access to, correction of or deletion of the data tied to your dog’s identifier, ask us to restrict processing, object to it, or ask for a copy in a portable format. Because we hold nothing that identifies you, we may need details from the App before we can find anything; where we cannot connect data to you, we may be unable to act on a request (Article 11 GDPR).
International transfers. Analytics data is transferred to and processed in the United States by Mixpanel, as described in section 4.
Complaints. You may complain to your local data protection authority: in the United Kingdom, the Information Commissioner’s Office; in Switzerland, the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner; elsewhere, the supervisory authority of your country.
8. Privacy officer
For Quebec’s Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (Law 25), the person responsible for the protection of personal information is Jonathan Maurice (support@turfdog.app).
9. Children
Turf is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
10. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and post the revised policy at this address.
